About the FoP
“Friends of Paros” is a not-for-profit association, founded at the initiative of the inhabitants of Paros in 2002, as well as of other people who feel, in one way or another, connected to this picturesque island of Cyclades Archipelago.
All “Friends” commonly recognise the important problems related to the development of the island. They all share one common concern: how to mitigate and resolve them, fully respecting at the same time the Cycladic character of Paros which is part of the world cultural heritage and a source of inspiration for everyone who lives, works and visits the island.
The association’s specific objective is to contribute to:
- the preservation, protection and/or rehabilitation of the environmental character of the island, putting the accent on aesthetic and social issues;
- the protection of the cultural heritage and the increase of cultural activities;
- the recognition of environmental and cultural issues, research and promotion of state-of-the-art solutions adapted to local particularities;
- the information of the Paros’ citizens on European issues.
Indicative activities for achieving these goals are: the dissemination of information, mainly via organising information seminars and other communication actions and publications; the development of a stable relationship among the local, regional and national authorities and with the European Union institutions and other international organisations (UNESCO, ICOMOS etc). The ambition of the association members is to promote dialogue and consultation, notably with the Paros Council and other local administrative bodies and regional authorities, cooperation with other NGOs, professional and organisations of the civil society and finally, the promotion of European ideals, politics and best practices.
The association is established on Paros and it runs a sub-unit in Brussels. It is administered by an eleven-member council which is elected every two years during the General Assembly of its constituent members.
