We Defend our Island’s beaches and coasts!
In the area of Vayia, in Kampos of Paros, construction work has been going on for some time now to build a wall on the coastline, about 2 meters from the waves.
Since Wednesday, 3.1.2024, we let the Planning Department of Paros, the Paros Police Department and the Environmental Directorate in Syros know that intensive work was being done to extend the wall. The Planning Department and the Police reacted immediately, and the Planning Department confirmed the illegality and ordered a stop work. However, the work continued even during night hours, with the help of floodlights.
The Mayor of Paros also took a stand on the issue, addressing letters to the Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Syros Land Registry and asking for the enforcement of legality.
We are determined not to stop the struggle that we started in the summer for the assertion of legality and our rights as citizens on the beaches and coasts of our island; we are organizing an excursion to the disputed point in Vayia to demonstrate our indignation towards everyone and everything that contributes to the perpetuation of the destructive arbitrariness on our island. This time, the Municipal Council of Paros joins our protest following its decision.
We will meet at the chapel of Agios Nikolaos (in Kampos) at noon on Sunday, 4/2/2024, and we will walk 500m to the disputed point.
